A pastel painting of a dragonfly, its wings and the green background blurred from its motion.

Dragon in Flight

I consider this one a collaboration with my father. He took the original snapshot, which I thought was a fantastic study of motion. It was a challenge, partcularly as a realist artist, to translate that Impressionistic blur with pastels.

When Dad saw this in progress, he spontaneously asked for it as a gift - which is the first time he's ever specifically asked for something as a gift from me in my life. What a success!

About This Series

This beautiful bug series sort of created itself. Since I'm always looking for detail, for those small moments captured by the eye, insects and other 'beautiful bugs' have frequently become a focus for my work. While often considered pests, creepy crawlies, or even just annoyances, insects play an important role in our ecosystem. As a child I was fascinated by pillbugs, lightning bugs, and of course butterflies, but I'd forgotten how enthralling they could be until I took up art and started to really look at the world around me once more.
