Crown of Gold, a painting of a brown butterfly feeding from the bright gold center of a red zinnia flower.

Crown of Gold

This piece, as well as Bee'z Kneez, is the result of a trip to the zoo! I never expected my favorite animal photos from that day to be of a bee and a butterfly, but when I noticed what my husband had accidentally captured when he took some pictures of the beautiful zinnias, I knew I had to try my hand at bringing their personalities to life.

About This Series

This beautiful bug series sort of created itself. Since I'm always looking for detail, for those small moments captured by the eye, insects and other 'beautiful bugs' have frequently become a focus for my work. While often considered pests, creepy crawlies, or even just annoyances, insects play an important role in our ecosystem. As a child I was fascinated by pillbugs, lightning bugs, and of course butterflies, but I'd forgotten how enthralling they could be until I took up art and started to really look at the world around me once more.
